Six Romantic Ideas in Central Japan
As you learned in my last post, Valentine’s Day and White Day in Japan are mostly about chocolate. However, these days are also the perfect times to make unforgettable memories. Not only is the weather perfect for visiting an onsen but some early blossoms are blooming and areas still have winter illuminations. Central Japan offers countless romantic experiences no matter your interests. From city spots to peaceful mountain retreats, here are some of my favorite date ideas to inspire your celebration in central Japan.
Hisaya-Odori Park (Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture)
Located in downtown Nagoya, Hisaya-Odori Park is ideal for an evening stroll. The park has beautifully lit pathways, cafes, and a variety of restaurants. The surrounding neighborhoods have many small restaurants too. For a special dinner, head to the Tower Hotel’s restaurant, where you can enjoy city views that are perfect for a romantic night out. There are numerous bars in walking distance to grab a night cap after dinner. If you are looking for more time outdoors, walk through Sakae or head towards Nagoya Castle for more beautiful views.
Suzuka Forest Garden/鈴鹿の森 (Suzuka, Mie Prefecture)
Suzuka Forest Garden is a seasonal garden near the foothills in Suzuka. From mid-February to mid-March, the garden holds its annual Plum Blossom Festival (梅祭り). During peak bloom, the grove transforms into a dreamlike scene of various pink hues, with some blossoms appearing almost pure white. Walking through the garden is not only perfect for a romantic outing but also a solo date. While the garden does get crowded, the best way to enjoy it without the midday rush is to arrive right at opening time on a weekday. It will still be lively but far less packed than other times. Be sure to check the official website for the latest bloom updates and pricing, as admission fees vary depending on the season’s peak. While there, don’t forget to grab a few plum souvenirs to take home.
Nabana no Sato Winter Illumination (Mie Prefecture)
Visit one of Japan’s most beautiful illumination events. Nabana no Sato transforms into a glowing wonderland during half the year. Buy tickets in advance, and dress warmly for this outdoor adventure. Although it can get very crowded, the light displays create a magical atmosphere perfect for strolling and talking. Each year the illumination has a specific theme and monthly events that are scheduled. Even if you miss the illumination, the flower gardens are definitely worth a visit as well. Check the official website for updated information on pricing and events.
Sake Tasting in Takayama (Gifu Prefecture)
Spend time in Takayama exploring the sake breweries and learning something new. Walk through the Takayama Old Townhistoric district that is lined with sake breweries, cafes, and shops. Many of the breweries offer tastings as well. Afterward, enjoy a Hida beef dinner and perhaps unwind at a local onsen for the ultimate relaxing date.
Relax in an Onsen Town (Aichi, Gifu, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui Prefectures)
Central Japan is home to many onsen towns that are perfect for a romantic getaway. Whether you prefer ocean views in Aichi or mountain retreats in other prefectures, these hot spring resorts offer luxurious accommodations, traditional meals, and relaxing baths. You can enjoy everything without ever leaving your resort. However, if you do want to escape into nature, most of the onsen towns offer that too. Keep in mind that some onsens have restrictions for guests with tattoos.
Art and History in Kanazawa (Ishikawa Prefecture)
Kanazawa blends culture, history, and modern charm into one city. Visit the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, the historic Higashi Chaya District, or a traditional craft workshop to enjoy your day. In this city, you can choose to have a relaxing low-key holiday or to do something more exciting. Don’t forget to end your day at one of the city’s local restaurants, known for fresh seafood.
While Valentine’s Day in Japan may mostly revolve around chocolate, it’s also a time to celebrate love and appreciation in unique ways. There’s something for everyone to enjoy. Which of these things do you want to do? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
